Kristi's Theme Song??? |
Lead | |
|
I'm not sure how accurate the YouTube poster was regarding the claim that this song was written especially for Kristi Yamaguchi...any ideas as to who the
actual composer was and if Kristi ever used this music in skating? Here's a link...beautiful piece of music, though!

I guess it's true...can't believe I never heard of/about it before...the composer's name is George Peter Tingley...

Kristi skated to that piece in the first "Skates of Gold" show, which was televised, back in late '93 or possibly early '94 -- her second
professional season.

I guess the quotes below answered my question...I would love to see Kristi skate to her own Theme Song...anyone have this on tape? Thanks!
-------------------------------------------- Cut and pasted from www.icompositions.com: "This is a re-creation of the original piano demo sent to Olympic gold-medalist Kristi Yamaguchi. She would go on to skate to the big orchestral version several times in live and televised performances. Recorded without metronome using the beautiful Steinway grand on JamPack #4. George Peter Tingley" --------------------- "Recorded at Berkeley's famed Fantasy Studios in 1993, this is the version Olympic gold-medalist Kristi Yamaguchi has used in several of her live and televised performances (e.g. IBM Skates of Gold, ABC Wide World of Sports, and CBS This Morning). Soloing wiht a 30-piece orchestra was especially thrilling considering that I was playing Bill Evans' hand-picked Yamaha Grand (a piano I swear that had at least two dozen dynamic levels). Happy to share with my fellow iCompers. Enjoy. George Peter Tingley plays "Kristi's Theme" - music for Kristi Yamaguchi" |

Ed is correct (of course!) Here's a youtube video from Skates of Gold which is incorrectly labeled as "East of Eden", but it is
"Kristi's Theme":

Thanks, Ed and Cat...there's a LOT more about Kristi that needs to be included in her "WIKI" page...for someone who has accomplished a lot and
done so much for other people, she deserves to be recognized!

This is absolutely correct. I am George's student, and I have learned this song.

Thanks for posting Mr. Tingley. I really love that piece of music. It's very pretty music and it complimented Kristi's skating so well!

Awww...what a privilege to have a celebrity on this discussion board! Welcome and thanks so much for writing such a beautiful composition especially for our
Kristi!
Just curious; did you write this music and approached Kristi or did Kristi's camp approach you? Were you a skating fan then and decided to write Kristi's theme because she was, in a way, inspired you like a "muse"? Sorry for asking...just wanted a little background info straight from the composer... By the way, I downloaded the Youtube rendition and both versions of this masterpiece from iCompositions.com so I'll have it forever...I listen to it often when I feel down...it's such an uplifting and inspirational song...it always brings smile to my face! Thanks so much! |

Avid-
Thanks for the question. After writing the music, I had a friend call Kristi's parents who were open to hearing the music. Soon I was to meet Kristi herself who loved the music. It was all something of a dream. There was, however, a period of waiting wondering how the music would ever be used. About a year later, I got a call from the Yamaguchis who informed me that Kristi wanted to use the song on SKATES OF GOLD and that the piece needed to be orchestrated. The whole process of writing such a piece to finally seeing her skate to it live at the Boston Garden, and then seeing it on TV was just amazingly fulfilling. I also wrote pieces for Nancy, Oksana, and Michelle but nothing ever came of them. I have always been eternally grateful to Kristi for taking my music seriously. By the way, Sandra Bezic was the fine choreographer. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.

Mr. Tingley, wow, you saw Kristi skate to your music LIVE! Thanks for the additional information...truly appreciate it! I don't need to hear the music
you've written for Nancy, Oksana or Michelle for me to know that they're just as beautiful...In my humble opinion, it was their loss for not taking you
up on your offer! Thanks again! Sincerely,
Sal B. |

Mr. Tingley-Thank you for your input for the forum. That is a wonderful piece of music. I wonder if you still keep in touch with the Yamaguchi family. I have
been to so many events that Kristi has put on that the family all know me and my wife. Have you attended any of Kristi's fundraisers?

Hi, klutch- No, I haven't been in touch with the Yamaguchis for some time now. If any of the fundraisers are held in the San Francisco Bay Area, it
certainly would be a fun opportunity for me to get back in touch with Kristi. Any info you may have in this regard would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, George
